Location: A4 Portway and Hotwell Rd Northbound carriageway
Works: Bristol City Council (BCC) – A4 Portway Project
Duration & Dates: Weds 10th December – 23:00-05:00
Thurs 11th December – 21:00-05:00
Traffic Management and Diversion: Northbound Road Closure – i.e. for traffic travelling out of Bristol towards Avonmouth (see map)
More information available here
The closures will be from Bennett Way and Cumberland Basin Road and will end at the Portway’s junction with Hadrian Close.
The overnight closures are needed so the barriers can be moved further up the road in preparation for the next stage of works, which are part of our A4 Portway project.
BCC is also collaborating with Wessex Water who will use the Thursday night closure to replace a damaged manhole cover on the Portway.
While the Portway is closed overnight, access will remain for pedestrians and cyclists on the shared-use pavement.
Motor vehicles, including buses, heading northbound will need to follow the diversion via Hotwells, Clifton Down and Stoke Bishop. Please see the attached diversion route map.
The bus services that will be impacted include the 9, 41 and 37 travelling northbound.
The following bus stops will be affected:
- Hotwell Road West – part-suspended only for service 41
- Merchants Road – part-suspended for services 41 and 9
- Roman Way North and Riverleaze Northwest – fully closed for all services
The works will not impact traffic heading southbound towards the city centre.
The A4 Portway project is being funded by the UK Government through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
Bristol City Council: “Thank you for your patience while we work to improve access for all to the Portway.”
