M48 HGV weight limit update – let us know how this is impacting you

Aug 21, 2025 | News, Public News, Roadworks, Transport | 0 comments

The weight limit restrictions on the M48 Bridge has had a significant impact on many businesses across the area, and we are endeavouring to gain an understanding of the scale of the impact.

SevernNet is a member of the M48 Stakeholder Steering Group representing business interests across Portbury Avonmouth Severnside.  We will keep you informed of developments and progress as much as we can, and we welcome any feedback you may have.

As you may well be aware, the most recent bridge surveys in the spring revealed that the main bridge cables have deteriorated and
weakened more quickly than anticipated. In order to reduce the load on these cables to keep the bridge open for most traffic the decision was taken to introduce a wt. limit of 7.5 tonnes. This is the short term solution.

National Highways and partners are working on a medium term solution. The aim of this is to enable the return of HGVs in managed volumes across the bridge. It is hoped to have more information about this in September 2025, for implementation by October 2026. I’m sure you’ll share our hope that we’re able to see implementation as soon as possible.
