National Highways closures at Almondsbury Interchange (October 2026 – February 2027)

From National Highways:

Almondsbury interchange is now 60 years old having been opened to traffic in September 1966. During it’s lifetime it has undergone a strict inspection and maintenance regime. Those inspections have resulted in us designing a scheme to carry out a number of renewals which will future proof the structure, ensure its resilience and reduce the risk of any future emergency works.

Phase One, where, and when?

The first phase of these works is planned to commence on the 11 October 2026 and will complete on the 4 December 2026.

During this time the section of the interchange which allows traffic travelling westbound on the M4 to transfer to the M5 north will be fully closed.

Our contractors will work double shifts and 7 days a week to renew the barriers, expansion joints and carry out waterproofing, concrete repairs, and resurfacing. It may appear at times that there are gaps when contractors are not on site, these gaps are programmed to allow for concrete and waterproofing curing.

Phase One, diversions

During the delivery of this scheme drivers of all vehicles will be diverted to the M5 South to turn at Junction 16 (Almondsbury) and then continue their journeys northbound on the M5. Alternatively, drivers could utilise M48 Junction 1 at Aust or M4 Junction 22 at Pilning.

Phase Two, where and when?

The second phase of these works is planned to commence on the 13 December 2026 and will complete on the 19 February 2027.

This scheme will see the same renewal activity on the section of the interchange which carries traffic travelling M4 East to M5 South. Our contractors will be working over two shifts daily and seven days a week.

Phase two, diversions

During the delivery of this scheme drivers will be diverted to the M5 North to turn at Junction 14 (Charfield) and then continue their journeys on the M5 South. Alternatively, drivers could utilise M4 East to Junction 19, exit onto the M32 and turn at Junction 1.

Phase one will result in higher traffic volumes at M5 Junction 16 (Almondsbury) as diverted traffic utilises this junction as the turn around point. Drivers using this junction should allow extra times for their journeys or seek an alternative route
