Wessex Water is nearing design completion of its £55 million North Bristol relief sewer project, which will see a 5km tunnel pass beneath the M5 motorway, Cribbs Causeway and Network Rail’s Henbury loop.Work is due to start in September 2019 and is expected to take approximately two and a half years to complete, ensuring the sewerage network can cope with ongoing and future development in the north of the city and South Gloucestershire.
The relief sewer will be built using a Tunnel Boring Machine launched from Lawrence Weston, passing below Henbury and continuing to Bristol Golf Club.
GENeco treats huge volumes of varied waste from the city and transforms it into useful products. This includes the food waste recycling from all of Bristol’s residents and sewage sludge from over 1 million people. GENeco also helps around 300 regional customers an alternative disposal route to landfill for the disposal of difficult to treat waste.
From this waste, GENeco produces enough renewably-sourced energy to power over 10,000 homes in the Bristol area, and heavily reduces the environmental impact of local businesses and the community. The by-product of its recycling processes is a nutrient-rich biofertiliser which is used on farms in the region, keeping valuable bio-resources in the local area.

M5 Avonmouth Interchange Bridge Deck Refurbishment – January 2019
Highways England will be starting a programme of works on the M5 junction 18 at Avonmouth on Saturday 5 January 2019. The work will continue until Wednesday 27 February 2019 for a period of approx. 8 weeks.
The purpose of the scheme is the rehabilitation of the existing bridge deck at the M5 Avonmouth interchange. The work is necessary because routine inspections have identified that some elements of the bridge deck have reached their design life and need to be replaced.
The works will involve the replacement of the south concrete verge, waterproofing and surfacing on the westbound carriageway. The works will also involve the replacement of verge drainage gullies in the kerb line, expansion joint replacement and new white line and cat eyes replacement.
Traffic Management
Work will be undertaken throughout the day between 08:00 and 18:00.
We will be working during the daytime, every day during the scheme, between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Night works will be carried out between the hours of 8pm and 6am.
Narrow lanes will be in place for the duration of the 8 week scheme, so that we can carry out the works safely.
There will also be a requirement for some overnight full road closures of the M5 during the works. This is for the safe installation and removal of traffic management, installation of the bridge joint and carrying out carriageway resurfacing.
Night works will be carried out between the hours of 8pm and 6am.
Full closure dates are currently programmed in as below: –
Saturday 5 January 2019
Friday 7 February 2019
Wednesday 20 February 2019
Tuesday 26 February 2019
Wednesday 27 February 2019
During these closures, a fully signed diversion route will be in place.
Please note that whilst HE always aim to work to the programme, unforeseen circumstances may mean slight changes to it. HE will always aim to notify you of any major changes within the programme but please monitor www.trafficengland.com/ to keep up-to-date.
HE would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption the work may cause you. HE will of course make every effort to ensure that the impact on the local community is kept to the absolute minimum.
If you have any queries or comments about the works and would like further information, please contact the Highways England Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 or by email: info@highwaysengland.co.uk.
Diversion route:
Traffic will be diverted via the M5 southbound, to junction 19, to re-join the M5 northbound and take the M5 exit slip road at junction 18.
A letter from Highways England detailing the works can be downloaded here.
