Highways England has informed us that further work is underway to remove the toll plaza and enable continuous travel at 70 mph.

  • Traffic management was put in place on the Westbound carriageway on Tuesday 23rd April.
  • A diversion is now in place for the next 8 weeks.
  • Drivers are diverted off M48 at junction 1 exit slip road and return to the route via the junction 1 entry slip road (this is a tried and tested diversion used during high winds).
  • Please note there will be a full westbound daytime closure of the M48 Severn Crossing on Sunday, April 28 between 7am and 7pm.

Highways England is encouraging drivers to consider using the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge to aid their journey during this period. The diversion is short but may cause congestion in peak periods.

Please allow plenty of time for your journey.
