As part of National Grid’s Hinkley Connection Project, Western Power Distribution (WPD) and its contractor, Balfour Beatty, are making changes to the local distribution network.

Part of this involves replacing a section of 132kV overhead line with underground cables between the substation on Avonmouth Way and a new cable sealing end pylon near the M49.

The work to install the underground cables is almost complete and the next step is to remove the section of pylons.

As the overhead lines cross the M49, the motorway will need to be closed to keep drivers and workers safe when the lines are taken down.
Two short closures have been agreed with Highways England, planned at a time to minimise delays to journeys:

  • Sunday 7 June 2020 – from 5.00am to 11.00am
  • Sunday 28 June 2020 – from 5.00am to 11.00am.
