From National Highways:

The bridges on the M5 at junctions 15 and 16 (Almondsbury and Patchway) are now over 50 years old and in need of refurbishment. Waterproofing, surfacing, expansion joints and repairs to the concrete are needed to maintain bridge deck integrity. This is part of ongoing bridge refurbishment works by the local National Highways South West team.

We’ve organised the work to overlap with the M4/M5 dynamic hard shoulder enhancements – reducing how long traffic management will be in place and enabling our contractors to share resources and cut costs.

The M5 bridge refurbishment works have been planned to avoid the peak summer getaway season, but some preparatory work will be carried out in advance.

Summary of works

31 July 2023 to end August 2023 (approx 1 month)

Preparation work commenced.

Overnight closures (20:00 to 06:00 subject to traffic flow) in place between M5 J15 and  M5 J17.

September 2023

Narrow lanes in place 24/7

Bridge refurbishment preparation works continue including construction of a crossover.

October 2023

Contraflow in place

The bridge deck works will be carried out in 4 distinct phases, each one requiring a change in the contraflow layout.

The project will be running until Summer 2024. There is no information as to how long the contraflow will be in operation
