Across Portbury Avonmouth Severnside we are working to support our local authorities race to zero by 2030
Bristol City Council (BCC) was the first LA in the UK to declare a climate emergency (in Nov 2018), followed by N. Somerset Council (Feb 2019), S. Glos. Council and West of England Combined Authority in July 2019. Their target is to reach net zero emissions by 2030.
An ecological emergency was declared by the LAs in 2020.
As an environmentally sensitive and low lying coastal community, addressing the climate and ecological emergency is urgent. We can build upon our local natural, social and economic resources to respond to the emergency. Let’s work together.
Our Climate Mitigation
The journey to avoid and reduce emissions is challenging but also offers opportunities. We’re working to transition from fossil fuels to powering our economy with renewable energy; and seeking ways to enable carbon sequestration through capture and storage, particularly in our natural habitats. Local examples include:
- Electrification of the vehicle fleet at The Bristol Port Company (TBPC)
- Use of bio-methane as a green gas into the grid, to power operations and as transport fuel at GENeco / Wessex Water
- Wind power generation across the area

A new climate is coming!
It’s essential to consider and understand local risks, develop plans to manage them, and put them into action.
Adaptation is about altering our behaviours, systems and ways of life.
Key areas include food, water and the built environment (warming and cooling)

Nature is collapsing at an alarming and unprecedented rate.
This is a grave concern as our web of life is dependant on the ecosystem services that nature provides, including our food and water.
Bristol’s One City Ecological Emergency goals note the importance of space for nature, reducing pesticide use and pollution and considering the impacts of our consumption footprints on nature
